Crowds cheer home the winners in the Whitstable 10k

Another capacity field of 600 runners completed the 14th Whitstable 10k on
May Bank Holiday Monday morning with victory going to Jason Cherriman
(Orpington) in 32min21sec and Liz Weeks (Sittingbourne) in 36min28sec.

The course records are held by Mike Coleman of Medway and Maidstone
(2004, 31:48) and Charlotte Dale of Invicta (2005, 32:54), who won outright in
2002 and again when improving her time three years later.

Cherriman went close to his personal best 10k time (32:05) in a gun to tape
display on the seafront from Tankerton Slopes. The top three was completed
by M40 masters Spencer Hempsted (Ilford, 34:06) and Martin Potter (London
Heathside, 34:38).

Local men in the top ten were Daniel Pyne (Dartford Harriers, 36:02) and M40
masters Mark Champion (Istead and Ifield, 36:23) and Nick Varley (Swanley,
36:35) as 29 athletes dipped under 40 minutes in favourable conditions.

Also in the top ten overall was Liz Weeks, who was over three minutes clear
in the women’s race. Kristina Mikalauskiene (Bexley, 39:45) and Lisa Reid
(Dartford Harriers, 39:54) completed the podium.

Leading local runners were Janine Brown (Maidstone Harriers, 44:38),
Jessica Dando (Dartford Harriers, 46:05) and Claire Wilkins (Medway and
Maidstone, 46:56). Sue James (Paddock Wood, 48:00) from Maidstone was
the W55 prize winner.
