Kent Cricket coach Jimmy Adams says the players are desperate to improve their home record in the Specsavers County Championship

Jimmy Adams says Kent are desperate to launch a winning sequence at Canterbury after their promotion hopes were hit by the weather.

After the wash-out at Worcester, Kent played out a draw at Leicestershire yesterday (Wednesday) in a game hampered by frequent wintry showers.

The Kent head coach admitted it had been ‘a bit chilly’ at Grace Road but was philosophical about falling more than 40 points behind leaders Essex in the race for the single Specsavers County Championship, Division 2 promotion place after two games.

He said: “The weather has not been kind to us but it’s cricket in England, it’s part and parcel of it. We can’t control the weather. It was just good to get out there at all and play some competitive cricket. The lads have been chomping at the bit.”

Glamorgan head to the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, for Kent’s next championship game which starts on Sunday. Kent failed to win at Canterbury in 2015.

Adams said: “After starting the season on the road, it’s always good to play your first home game.

“We have looked back through our results at home over the past four or five years and they have not been noteworthy. It is something we are aware of and are desperate to get right.”

Adams claimed he had never seen a First Class ‘handled ball’ dismissal before Sean Dickson’s departure at Leicester on Sunday.

He added: “It’s disappointing but one of those things, the rules are the rules. I’m sure it will not happen again in his career.”

Alex Blake made his first Championship appearance since 2012 at Leicester, the 27-year-old making 26 in the first innings.

Adams said: “We looked at pre-season performances and despite the weather, we saw enough there to include him. It’s good to see him in the four-day side after a few years.”

With Tom Latham expected to open the batting against Glamorgan, Adams claimed he did not know who would make way but added: “It’s generally good if you can afford a player the opportunity to play a few games but we’ll look at who is selected on a game-by-game basis.”
