Kent all-rounder Calum Haggett says he hopes he will be even better next year after an impressive debut campaign which saw him earn a new contract with the club.

The 22-year-old was handed a one-year deal on the eve of the season after impressing during a trial spell with the 2nds and seized the opportunity, taking 26 LV= County Championship wickets at an average of under 35 and averaging over 40 with the bat in 13 innings.

His season has been brought to a premature end by a side strain suffered in the draw against Essex. However, Haggett has already set his sights on a winter stint in Australia and aims to come back to Canterbury improved for 2014.

He said: “I am happy with how the season’s gone. I am glad I managed to do enough to warrant a contract and look forward to a bright future with Kent.

“Hopefully, next year, I can build on this season. I will keep working hard. There has been a lot of learning this year and I want to continue to learn.”

Haggett revealed his high point of the season was his first class debut against Cardiff MCCU in April, while he took three wickets and scored 40 on his championship debut at Leicester the following week.

He will fly to the Gold Coast in Australia this winter, linking up with Kent team-mates Fabian Cowdrey and Daniel Bell-Drummond to play district cricket in Brisbane.
