Kent all-rounder Calum Haggett will keep working hard to improve as career-bests keep on coming

Despite producing a string of career-best performances this season, Calum Haggett has vowed to continue working hard to keep improving.

After playing a dozen times in the Championship during his breakthrough 2013 season, claiming 26 wickets at an average of 35, the 24-year-old all-rounder was frustrated by injury last year, playing just four four-day games and taking five scalps costing 71 runs apiece.

This year, however, the paceman already has 21 wickets at 24 in his seven appearances and posted improved best marks with bat and ball on several occasions. His career best of 54 with the bat and 4-61 with the ball set against Gloucestershire in May were surpassed by his 80 against Surrey at the Oval earlier this month and last week’s 4-43 in the second innings against Essex at Tunbridge Wells, which also sealed best match figures of 7-97.

Haggett said: “It was a good game for us, after losing to Surrey the week before it was a good turnaround and to do it the way we did was excellent.

“Hopefully the career-bests will continue to come. I’m happy at the moment, as long as we’re winning, and I’m happy to chip-in with whatever I can and do my best.

“When the day comes that four-fers become five or six obviously I’ll take it, but for the moment as long as the team is doing well then I’m happy.

“I’m sure with hard work it will come eventually, it’s something to strive for.”

He added: “I feel it has been going well with the red ball. I’ve put in a good couple of performances, I got the rewards that day, but with Mitch Claydon, Darren Stevens and Matt Hunn – it was a good all-round bowling performance there, with Matt Coles sitting out.”

Haggett hailed the strength in depth of Kent’s bowling line-up in all formats, adding: “Colesy’s been our stand-out bowler, he’s been excellent, but it was good to prove we can do it without him.

“It’s looking good – hopefully we can put a few good performances together with the red ball because it’s been a bit inconsistent this year.”

He added: “I’m not in the one-day squad which gives me a couple of days to rest and practise my skills.

“Hopefully I can push my way back in but with Ivan Thomas, Hunny, Colesy, Mitch – I’ll be trying to get back in.

“I’ll be pushing but when the lads are winning it doesn’t really matter. It depends on the day and who the captain and coach go with.”
