Stand-in skipper Geraint Jones insists Kent can still secure
championship promotion, despite the prospect of going through the first half of the campaign winless.

Kent’s eighth game of 16 in LV= County Championship Division 2 got under way against Glamorgan on Wednesday.

Despite Kent chalking up five draws and two losses from their opening seven games, Jones – captain in the absence of James Tredwell – says the table remains tight enough to give the county hope of going up.

He said: “It’s obviously not been the start to the season we wanted, but I feel that performances are going in the right direction, and in particular the last three weeks we have seen more players coming into form.

“We’ve been a little frustrated to have not got the results, but we are not far away.”

Kent moved off the bottom with Saturday’s draw at Hampshire and going
into the game at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, sat only 27 points
behind second-placed Worcestershire, who have played a game more.

Jones said: “Twenty-seven points is nothing. A good win with bonus
points this week would jump us right up there again.

“We know as players that the club hierarchy and the supporters want to
see us in Division 1, and we want to play at the highest level too.
“That has been the goal all along, and it is still achievable, but we
have to start winning games. I am still a firm believer we can do it.”
