Guy Martin could race at Lydden Hill after announcing British Rallycross Championship debut

Guy Martin could swap two wheels for four at Lydden Hill this year after announcing he will make his rallycross debut in 2016.

The motorcycle racing star and TV presenter will drive a Ford Focus Supercar in a yet-to-be-confirmed round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship.

The 34-year-old will compete in the latter part of the season, once he has finished his latest TV schedule with Channel 4.

It means Martin could race at the Lydden round on August Bank Holiday Monday.

He said: “It’s something different and that always excites me.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge some time later in the year subject to other commitments.”

Martin, who has dovetailed his racing efforts with TV work since 2011, will drive a Team RX Racing Ford Focus.

The team’s lead driver and former British Rallycross champion Ollie O’Donovan has organised the drive in the 600bhp four-wheel-drive machine.

“We’re all really excited to be working with him, he’s a real racer and I think rallycross will suit him very well..." - Ollie O'Donovan

O’Donovan said: “Guy is a huge name. Many people will know who he is without being heavily into motorsport or bike racing.

“It’s a pleasure to have him compete as part of Team RX Racing.”

Isle of Man TT star Martin will test the Focus before he makes his rallycross debut.

O’Donovan added: “I’m sure Guy will have no problem learning to drive the car, but we will go through everything with him at a test session to give him the best chance possible at whichever event he does.

“We’re all really excited to be working with him, he’s a real racer and I think rallycross will suit him very well.”

O’Donovan will also provide an RX150 buggy for Martin to sample at the test day.

The last motorcyclist to compete in rallycross was superbike rider Leon Haslam, who drove a Suzuki Swift in 2009.

Former Top Gear host James May was the last TV presenter to try his hand at the sport, handling a VW Polo in a demonstration event at Lydden in 2014.

He followed ex-F1 pilot Tiff Needell into the sport, who campaigned a Will Gollop-prepared MG Metro 6R4 at Brands Hatch in the 1980s.

The British Rallycross Championship holds its second event of 2016 at Lydden on March 27-28, which also incorporates a round of the Belgian Rallycross Championship.

It will return for its sixth round on August 29, when Martin could appear.
