Opener Sam Northeast has reflected on Kent’s disappointing start to the season but insists the squad are working hard to get back on track.

In the opening three LV= County Championship Division 2 games, Northeast scored 79 runs in six innings and recorded only 11 in two YB40 innings, which led to him being left out for the last two games.

Instead, he lined-up for Kent 2nds against Hampshire at Southampton where he scored 17 in his only innings. However, after returning for the four-day game against Worcestershire, Northeast top-scored with 52 in the first innings to reignite hopes of a return to last year’s form when he led the team with 969 first class runs in all competitions.

Northeast said: “It has been a pretty disappointing start for a lot of us. Coming back from playing in Australia in the winter I felt good, I don’t think I was far away from my best.

“It hasn’t quite gone how we would have liked. We are slightly off the ball compared to where we were last year but we are all working hard to try and get back on track.

"We need to sit down to work some things out and go back to basics if we can.”

He added: “Everyone needs to look at themselves. We all need to bring our A-game to the next game and if we can do that, then everyone can go forward together.

“There’s no point being dramatic and making lots of changes. It’s still early in the season and a lot can change. We have got to stay positive.
“We are playing some good stuff in the one-day game and need to transfer that form into the four-day game.”
