Talk of the Townsend: Hockey star Susannah Townsend talks about England's Champion's Trophy campaign and Great Britain's Rio 2016 prospects

It seems strange saying it because as an elite athlete you go into every competition to win but returning from the Champions Trophy having finished in 5th place is not actually too disappointing.

Of course there is part of you which wants to go in and win it, I want to win everything because that’s the type of person I am, and we did go in to medal which we didn’t achieve, but I think overall we’re not looking back at the tournament too negatively.

You have to be realistic about where you are as a team and what you are building towards and for us that is Rio in 2016.

Danny Kerry only came back in into the (Head Coach) position permanently in September and he has been working on changing our style of play and our formation which takes a while to develop and to bed in.

So I think looking back at the tournament finishing in 5th place is not as bad as it sounds. Apart from the game against New Zealand, (England lost 3-1), I thought we played some really good hockey, we didn’t put in any really bad performances, the results obviously weren’t great but there’s a lot of potential.

We seem to have a penchant for providing thrilling penalty shuffles for our supporters. (England defeated China 5-3 on penalties to finish 5th with goalkeeper Maddie Hinch saving three penalties).

Maddie is an immense goalkeeper and I think the best in the world. She prepares meticulously and really does her homework on all the teams we face. You can never really practice penalty shuffles as you can never replicate the atmosphere of a tournament.

Everyone who takes a penalty in the team, whether they score it or not, is massively respected by everyone because it takes real guts to stand up there and do it.

Personally I was really pleased with my tournament, I felt I played really well and really enjoyed playing in Argentina – it’s an amazing to place to play.

We reunited at Bisham Abbey [England Hockey’s training base] on January 5 and it’s great to be all back together - Christmas and the break seems a very long time ago!

Although the memory of doing my shopping just five days before Christmas at Westfield in Stratford is an experience I would happily forget!

We’re currently in a really intense block of training as we don’t have a tournament until May/June when it is the Olympic Qualifiers so we will be playing those as Great Britain as opposed to England.

It’s a good chance to really work on things as a team especially as we’re slightly changing the way we play so these five months at the start of the year are crucial for us to really get it together.

That's why it was particularly nice to have some ‘down time’ over Christmas and do ‘normal things’ such as see family and friends and go to the football as now it is full on hockey until about September.

This year we’ve got the European Championships which are being held in London at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis centre which was formerly Eton Manor where we won our bronze in 2012.

We’ve also got Olympic qualifiers and the Investec London Cup so it’s a packed but really exciting season. I feel we’re in a good place as a team and have a lot to build on as we head into 2015 and towards 2016 which looms ever closer on the horizon!
