One hundred international caps within sight as Canterbury Ladies Hockey Club's Susannah Townsend named in GB squad for Champions Trophy in London

Susannah Townsend has her sights set on reaching a century of international caps later this month.

The 26-year-old Canterbury Ladies star, a former Sutton Valence School pupil, has appeared 95 times in international hockey and on Wednesday afternoon was included in the GB squad for the Champions Trophy which gets under way in London next week.

Britain’s first match at the Lee Valley Olympic Park is against Argentina, ranked No.2 in the world on June 18 (2pm). The following day former Polo Farm coach Danny Kerry’s side take on the world and Olympic champions the Netherlands.

They are also due to face New Zealand on June 21, the USA two days later and old foes Australia on June 25 in what could be Townsend’s 100th appearance.

The classification and medal matches will take place on Sunday, June 26.

Townsend and Holcombe’s star keeper Maddie Hinch, who revealed on Tuesday she is swapping the Rochester club for Dutch giants Stichtsche next season, are joined in the squad by Holcs’ Shona McCallin, Sam Quek, Nicola White and former Holcs player Laura Unsworth, for whom it will be a fifth Champions Trophy campaign, having helped GB to their best-ever finish of second in 2012.

After Hinch's move was confirmed a statement from Holcombe said: "Maddie has always openly discussed with Holcombe HC her desire to play in Holland at some point during her career.

"The international programme quietens down slightly post Rio 2016 Olympic Games and gives Maddie the perfect opportunity to explore and develop her game.

"As a dedicated player and role model to our junior section for the past three seasons, Maddie goes with our blessing. We wish her the very best of luck and look forward to seeing her back at Holcombe Park in the not-too-distant future."
