Kent spinner says he has tricks up his sleeve to help combat big-hitting Australian batsmen when England's ODI Tri Series begins at SCG

Kent spinner James Tredwell claims he has ‘tricks and plans’ up his sleeve to help combat the threat of big-hitting Aussies when England’s ODI Tri Series begins in the early hours of Friday morning.

England face Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground tomorrow, with Tredwell hoping his performances in two warm-up wins in Canberra this week, which saw him take 5-73 combined, will be enough to earn him his 45th ODI cap at the SCG.

The 32-year-old endured a torrid time when his off-spin was targeted by the Aussies on their most recent visit to England in late 2013 with his 20 overs of action, spread across three matches, yielding four wickets but costing England 151 runs in a series they lost 2-1.

Tredwell did tighten up Down Under during the Ashes tour, but posted a combined 0-96 over three ODI appearances, and asked this week whether he could avoid a new onslaught, Tredwell said: “We’ll see. Hopefully, if selected.”

He added: “You go through those experiences and have to come out the other side of them. I’m still here (in the England set-up) which is a great thing. Those are the challenges we’ll come up against in this tour.

“Hopefully I’ve got a bit more experience and gone through that and hopefully have a few more tricks and plans to combat that now.”

Tredwell claimed there was ‘no reason why I can’t enjoy success’ Down Under and added: “I think I’ve been bowling pretty well of late. I want to carry on on this tour.”
