Ray Turner has his sights on a lucrative FA Cup run which will bring vital funds into Faversham Town.

The Lilywhites host Worthing in the preliminary round on Saturday (3pm) and Turner says the club needs big crowds and cup runs to continue their progress.

He said: “The cup is important for clubs like us. It is vital to pick up some revenue.

“We had a decent crowd against Sittingbourne (on Monday) but it wasn’t huge, and the gate against Horsham before that wasn’t the biggest.

“We’ve had some good results in cups but historically, the club has not had great cup runs. We’ve tended to go through one round and that would be it. Hopefully, we can put it together and go on a run.

“If we could get through then we would face Cray in the next round and we’d love to give it a go against a higher-level team.”

Town go into the tie – the winners of which will get £1,925 – in good form after a draw at Herne Bay on Saturday and three points against Sittingbourne.

Jamie Maxted and Luke Harvey remain suspended but Tony Ashmore is available while Dan King and Darren Marsden will be assessed at training tonight (Thursday).

Meanwhile, Rhys Lawson has left the club to join Hythe – for whom he scored on his debut against Hastings on Saturday.

Turner said: “He’s not got as many minutes as he’d like so far and he thinks he has a better chance of minutes there. I am not going to keep a player that’s unhappy so we move on.”

Meanwhile, Town have signed former Grimsby defender James Etherington.

The 21-year-old cousin of Stoke City midfielder Matthew saw his time at Grimsby cut short by a serious knee injury which kept him out of the game for more than a year.

Town will play Dulwich Hamlet in the Ryman League Charity Shield on Tuesday, September 17 after Concord Rangers and Maidstone United opted out of the fixture.
