Faversham Town manager Ray Turner says avoiding injury is vital in final pre-season game

Ray Turner says the only thing that matters from Town’s final pre-season game on Saturday is emerging with a clean bill of health.

Almost a year ago to the day, Faversham boss Turner lost four first-teamers to injury in their final pre-season game at Leatherhead and he said: “The only thing I want from this weekend is no injuries.

“We were missing half our team for the first game of the season so first and foremost at this time of year you want to have everyone available.”

Faversham head to the Bostik North side Waltham Abbey seeking to complete their preparations for a new assault on Bostik South promotion with a third straight win.

The latest of them came with a 2-1 success against Southern Counties East, Premier Division side Canterbury City on Saturday.

Turner said: “It was a realistic game for us against a side with quality players at this level and aspirations of promotion. We have beaten Sheppey before them and Waltham will be another realistic game for us.

“Pre-season has gone all right – we have been steady rather than spectacular. It was nice to see us go up a gear for 25 or 30 minutes in the second half and could have scored a couple more goals. The results become more important the closer to the season you get.

“We have stepped up our play and our sharpness over the past six weeks and there is a good feel to the group now. We are nearly there.”

Town’s league campaign starts at VCD Athletic on Saturday, August 12.
