Makeshift keeper James Peacock admitted he was in shock after saving a penalty which earned Faversham a hard-fought point against Whitstable on Tuesday night.

The former Oystermen centre-back was called into action by boss Ray Turner with regular No.1 Simon Overland falling sick on Tuesday morning and no reserve keeper available.

Peacock revealed: “Our regular keeper was ill and our second-choice had to work so Ray rang me on Tuesday afternoon and asked if I’d do it.

“I went in goal in pre-season training, just mucking about but I didn’t do too badly and they must have remembered that.

“Obviously, I don’t have any gloves so Simon’s mum and dad had to pick his gloves up and bring them down to the ground.

“I was a bit nervous before the game and once it started it was all a bit surreal.”

Peacock flung himself to his right to stop Steve Hafner’s 39th-minute penalty and then bounced up to collect the rebound to rapturous cheers from a large Salters Lane crowd.

He admitted: “I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think anyone thought I’d have a chance but I just decided to pick a side and picked right.

“It was a weird one because I was feeling all pleased that I’d saved it but then I saw everyone running towards me and I realised I had to get up and get the loose ball. It was a great feeling.”

The pick of Peacock’s saves came from a Charlie Smith volley after half-time and Peacock admitted: “I didn’t have too much to do in the first half but in the second half I had to make a few saves and I thought I did pretty well.

“I’m not sure if I want to do it again on Sunday but we’ll see how Simon recovers.

“I’ll have to mention a clean-sheet bonus to the boss at training.”
