Kent Cricket assistant coach Matt Walker says the wicket used for the LV= County Championship Division 2 game against Leicestershire was dreadful

Kent Cricket assistant coach Matt Walker has hit out at the state of the Leicestershire wicket which was used for this week's LV= County Championship Division 2 fixture.

The Midlanders’ decision to prepare a green top at Grace Road backfired as Matt Coles took 10 wickets to lead Kent to an eight-wicket victory in just over two days.

Walker said: “I thought it was dreadful. I understand sides in Division 2 will produce result wickets.

“I’m not taking the moral high ground but it doesn’t do anything for cricket and the bigger picture of developing young players.

“You literally had to land the ball in a big area and the wicket did the rest.
“It’s disappointing, particularly with the nice weather we’ve had over the last 10 days, that neither team were playing a spinner. That’s not good for the game.

“You don’t bat on a pitch like that – you just survive or you slog. It was a million miles away from what a four-day wicket should be but we knew what was coming and prepared for it.

“Colesy was brilliant and he has been since he came back. It’s never easy to deal with pace on a wicket like that.

“Leicester prepared a result wicket but we have one of the best fast bowlers in the country, so good luck with that. He’ll just keep coming for you.”
