Canterbury Ladies coach Jen Wilson content with city club's start to Hockey 5s indoor Championship campaign

Jen Wilson was satisfied after Canterbury Ladies kept their hopes alive of reaching the last four of the Hockey 5s Indoor Championships by winning their final two games of the opening Premier Division weekend at Bromsgrove School on Sunday.

The city club opened the day with a 4-2 win over previously unbeaten Sutton Coldfield and beat Harleston Magpies 6-2 later in the day, with Sarah Kerly taking her tally for the weekend to five while Mel Clewlow, Dirkie Chamberlain and Lizzie Neal all scored twice on Sunday.

On Saturday Canterbury lost 5-2 against East Grinstead, despite a goalless first half and 5-3 against Reading, having led 3-2 at the break in a game cut 17 seconds short after Wilson sustained a facial injury which needed hospital treatment and stitches.

Going into the second weekend Canterbury lie fifth but only out of the top-four on goal difference, with second-placed Slough only a point ahead.

Bowdon Hightown are the only side with maximum points.

Wilson – who this week appealed to the FIH for attacking players to be allowed to use face protection at short corners in future – said: “We said before the weekend that we’d be satisfied with two wins and anything else would be a bonus.

“We’re traditionally slow to get going in indoor hockey but we improved well through the weekend. The table was always going to be extremely tight and it certainly looks like it’s going to be that way.

“Goal difference often comes into play in who makes the semi-finals and we’ll be conscious of that, though I’m not one to target any particular games.”

Canterbury will return to Bromsgrove on January 3 and 4, aiming to secure a last-four berth later in the month with the final being held at Wembley on January 25.
