The M20 was shut in both directions after a lorry carrying beer overturned this afternoon.

An HGV ended up on its side on the coast-bound stretch of the motorway between J2 (Wrotham) and J3 (M26).

A section of the carriageway was closed for recovery work after the accident at about 12.10pm.

The overturned lorry had shed its load of beer and caused a fuel spillage. There were no reported injuries.

Motorists were warned to expect delays and avoid the area while the emergency services were at the scene.

The Highways Agency said the road was expected to stay shut throughout the evening rush-hour.

A spokesman said the cab was also leaking diesel, which had to be cleared before the carriageway can be re-opened.

Drivers were being diverted off the M20 at J2, and via the A20 and M26 to rejoin the M20 at J3.

Meanwhile, a caravan overturned in a separate crash on the same stretch of the motorway. The vehicle was recovered by around 2pm.
