Family of Amy Winehouse, including dad Mitch from Greenhithe, lash out at Amy film following screening at Cannes Film Festival

The family of singer Amy Winehouse has hit out at filmmakers for being "misleading" as a documentary about the star is premiered at Cannes Film Festival.

Relatives accused the team behind the film - called Amy - of missing out on an opportunity to celebrate her life after allegedly carrying a number of falsehoods.

The film has received rave reviews since its premiere at Cannes before it hits British cinemas later this summer.

It is directed by British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, whose previous work inlcudes Senna, a biopic of Brazilian motoring ace Ayrton Senna.

But Amy's dad Mitch, who has a home in Greenhithe, and mum Janis are furious with the final cut.

In a statement, the family said: "The Winehouse family would like to disassociate themselves from the forthcoming film about their much-missed and beloved Amy.

"The documentary about her life will be released this summer and receive its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

"They feel that the film is a missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that it is both misleading and contains some basic untruths.

"There are specific allegations made against family and management that are unfounded and unbalanced.

"The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy’s associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life."

They also say the film does a "disservice" to those struggling from addictions by misunderstanding the condition and its treatment.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Kapadia said he had not set out to upset the family: "I’m just trying to show what her life was like.

"Nobody said anything they felt so uncomfortable with that they wouldn’t sign a release, and that includes her family...they would not be in the film unless they’d agreed."

Talented Amy, who's hits include Back to Black and Rehab, had a highly publicised struggle against drug addiction, using heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis.

But her death in July 2011 was as a result of alcohol poisoning after she was found in her flat in Camden with empty bottles of vodka on the floor.
