Kent Fire and Rescue Service and an explosive ordnance disposal team was also called as teams work to identify the purpose and safety of the items.

The cordon was eventually lifted at around 6.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "While inside the address a number of materials were located and Kent Police worked with the Ministry of Defence to identify their purpose and safety.

"As a result, an EOD team was dispatched to the scene and these materials have since been identified as safe.

"The cordon has been lifted and residents evacuated from nearby properties have been allowed back home."

The arrested man remains in custody.
