Dartford Crossing sees car set alight after getting shunted at London-bound toll plaza

Firefighters rushed to a car blaze at the Dartford river crossing in the early hours of this morning after an incident involving three vehicles.

The Volkswagen Golf was described as “a bit of a mess” by a spokesmen for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, after it was "shunted" by another vehicle at the north toll plaza which led to the engine bursting to flames at 3am this morning.

Considerable damage was caused to both the front and rear of the vehicle, although nobody was hurt by the incident - according to the Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

All vehicles were removed from the carriageway by 4.50am and traffic was not affected by the accident, according to a spokesperson from the Highways Agency.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said there were no complications with extinguishing the fire.
