Charlton Athletic kept up their lead at the top of League 1 with a win at home to Chesterfield on Saturday.

A crowd of more than 22,000 flocked to The Valley on the back of reduced ticket prices and were given plenty to cheer about in the opening stages.

Paul Hayes netted his first home goal of the season on 19 minutes when he latched on to the rebound from a Bradley Wright-Phillips effort which Chesterfield keeper Greg Fleming could only parry.

Johnnie Jackson doubled the home side’s advantage 10 minutes later when he finished in the area from a Dale Stephens cross.

Chesterfield striker Leon Clarke spurned a glorious opportunity to pull a goal back before half-time when he blasted over from just two yards out from Danny Whitaker’s cross.

Whitaker pulled the visitors back in to the game from the penalty spot with 18 minutes to go, converting after Clarke was upended by Michael Morrison.

Despite a strong finish from Chesterfield, Wright-Phillips (pictured) put the seal on all three points in injury time. He dived in at the far post to head home from Scott Wagstaff’s deep cross for his sixth goal of the season.
