Dick and Dom ready for record

Peregrine falcons Dick and Dom could have their world record attempt curtailed this weekend thanks to the weather.

The birds, who are based at Eagles Height in Eynsford, have been in vigorous training in their bid to be crowned the world’s fastest creature by Guinness World Records. Today marks 60 years since the first edition of Guinness World Records was published.

The one-year-olds were due to take flight from a hot air balloon at a height of 2,000ft on Saturday evening and hopefully reach a staggering speed of at least 250mph. But the forecast could, quite simply, rain on Dick and Dom’s parade.

Speaking earlier this week, trainer and Eagle Heights co-director Jonathan Ames said: “Everything is looking good accept the weather. At the moment the forecast is good so fingers crossed it will all go well.

“The only thing that could stop the attempt would be wind or rain because we won’t be able to launch the balloon.

“But Dick and Dom are ready to go and super fit. I have no worries with them whatsoever.”

The birds, who were born and bred at the centre in Lullingstone Lane, will only have one attempt each on the day at setting the record.

A final decision as to whether the flight would go ahead is due to be made.

Mr Ames, who has been training them with the use of a drone, is determined that any dismal forecast will not dampen his hopes of setting a new world record.

The 29-year-old said: “Whatever happens, we are definitely going to do it.

“If the balloon attempt fails I’m going to speak to people with microlights. We won’t be giving up.”
