Charlton fan Phil Reeks is face of campaign to oust Charlton Athletic owner

A man from Greenhithe is the face of a new campaign urging the owner of Charlton Athletic to leave the club.

Phil Reeks, 28, is seen as a five-year-old at The Valley in 1993, alongside the slogan: “Here before you and here long after you’ve gone”.

The image has been displayed on a billboard near the stadium and is aimed at Roland Duchatelet, who has appointed five managers in two years since taking over in January 2014.

Charlton sit bottom of the Championship after Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City, and Phil hopes the campaign can help oust the Belgian and get the club back on track.

“The photo on the billboard was taken on my first visit to The Valley,” he said.

“Since then I have visited hundreds of times, and I am sure I will go hundreds more – but not under the current owners.

“At present I am taking a leave of absence and only attending away games.

“That’s because, like many others, I will not fund this mad and selfish experiment.”

Phil has signed up to the fan-run Coalition Against Roland Duchatelet (CARD), which funded the billboard and has protested outside the stadium.

An online petition has also been launched, and merchandise is available for fans wishing to support the campaign.

“It’s not about results,” explained Phil. He said it was about the staff, the player recruitment policy and “the same mistakes being repeated again and again”.

He continued: “Over the years, I’ve had roughly 12 season tickets around the Covered End, but I don’t currently have a season ticket.

“Even the club has admitted that 3,000 of its season-ticket holders aren’t currently attending games at the moment, and it’s doing nothing to win those fans back.

“I fully support CARD’s effort to campaign against the owners and look forward to a time when we win back our club, no matter how long it takes.”
