Gravesend teenager Ashley Cousins plays Ben in Gangsta Granny at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford

Growing up, Ashley Cousins was a regular in the audience at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford.

One time, when he was very young, he even went to a dress rehearsal there to see his nan tap dancing.

He dreamed one day of treading the boards and tonight he will make the switch from the stalls to the stage when he takes on a starring role.

Born in Gravesend Ashley, 18, plays the main character of Ben in the comedy drama Gangsta Granny.

The stage adaptation of David Walliams’ best-selling novel is part of a national tour and will play in Dartford from November 26 - 29.

Ashley said he was looking forward to revisiting the theatre.

He said: “It will be great to perform in Dartford when all my old school friends and family can come and see me!”

His interest in theatre started early. He began his career in 2009 as Prince Talus in Medea, directed by Phil Willmott, the founder of London-based production company The Steam Industry.

Immediately after that he was chosen to play the character of Tall Boy in the hit show Billy Elliot the Musical at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre, a role that he continued to play for three-and-a-half years.

He now lives in Longfield and recently completed his A-levels at Meopham School.

When he is not performing, he enjoys pursuing several other interests, he said. “I am a keen ukulele player.

"My grandfather is a musician and I am constantly inspired by his talent. I also enjoy reading a lot, going to the theatre and getting politically involved.”

This will be his first tour with Gangsta Granny and he said he was especially looking forward to performing at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft.

He said: “It looked wonderful when I passed it recently. Also Milton Keynes sounds fascinating. I have never been there."
