An award-winning bride-to-be is thrilled now she can finally look forward to her special day.

Sherrine Young, 27, put off her wedding because she didn’t want to be a “fat bride”.

After months of hard work the nursing assistant of Ruby Court, Princes Road, Dartford, lost more than seven stone and was voted South London District Woman of the Year by weight loss organisation Slimming World.

The competition recognises people who have made substantial steps to improve their healthy lifestyle.

Sherrine, who works at a doctors’ surgery, attended St Anselm’s Slimming World group in Dartford and was voted by her fellow slimmers to be their regional representative in the competition.

She said: “I was unhappy. I was shopping in Bluewater and the last straw was when I picked up a 22 size pair of jeans that were too small.

“A patient came into work who had lost a lot of weight, and he inspired me to lose weight myself.”

Along with 42 other women, she will travel to the organisation’s head office in Alfreton, Derbyshire, on Sunday, where she stands be one of 10 women who will make it to the grand final at the ICC arena in Birmingham.

Sherrine dropped from 17st 4lb to 10 stone in 42 weeks after joining Slimming World in June last year, and says healthy eating and zumba classes were the secret to her success.

"I never wanted to go but now to go shopping and pick up a size eight or a size 10 is amazing" - Sherrine Young

Her wedding is booked for June next year and she admits it’s all still sinking in.

She said: “I can’t believe it. It’s amazing that I’m going to be getting married. I never wanted to go but now to go shopping and pick up a size eight or a size 10 is amazing.”

St Anselm’s Slimming World group is held every Thursday at 5pm and 7pm at St Anselm’s Church, West Hill, Dartford.
