Dartford Labour members spark row with Conservatives over use of Mick Jagger's picture on political magazine

A Conservative magazine calling for an end to political squabbling has sparked a row with Labour councillors over the use of a picture of Mick Jagger.

Labour member Jonathan Hawkes accused the Tories of being “desperate” after a small image of the Rolling Stones frontman featured on the cover along with 60 other images.

He accused them of showing a “lack of judgement” given Jagger’s decision not to publicly align himself with any party.

Dartford Tory leader Jeremy Kite hit back, branding his comments as “absolutely ridiculous”.

Cllr Kite said: “If we had sought to say he supported the Tories, clearly that is wrong but I would be very surprised if anybody even thought we were doing that when they saw the cover.”

The campaign booklet details what the Tory-led council has achieved over the past five years, including no rises in council tax, no “significant” cuts to services and a continued weekly bin collection.

Several pages call for the community to prevail over political squabbling.

It reads: “Childish political squabbling doesn’t help communities. We inherited a council awash with political squabbling and replaced it with a common-sense, cross-party approach that got people working together.”
