Fire crews used a winch to remove the car from the back of the lorry to enable them to free the injured man. He was then handed into the care of paramedics.

The road was shut from 5.20am until around 7am, but major delays remained until about 9.30am.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to collision that was reported to involve a car and a lorry on the M25, near junction 5, at 4am on Thursday 7 July.

"Secamb and Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended and a man has since been taken to a local hospital.

An ambulance spokesman said: "Two ambulances, three cars, our HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) and the air ambulance attended the scene.

"A man aged in his 20s was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken as a priority to Princess Royal University Hospital for further treatment.

"He was conscious en route to hospital and was immobilised for potential injuries."
