Murder inquiry leads to arrest in Dartford

Officers have arrested a man in Dartford over the death of a man who was stabbed in the heart.

The 30-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, January 17, on suspicion of the murder of Luther Edwards near Bethnal Green Underground Station in July last year.

He was taken to an east London police station where he was subsequently bailed to a date to be confirmed.

The man is the ninth person arrested in connection with the inquiry, which is led by detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Police were initially called to reports of a stabbing near Bethnal Green Underground Station at 10.35pm on July 29, 2016.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and a man - later identified as Luther - was found collapsed on the forecourt of a petrol station at the junction of Old Ford Road and Cambridge Heath Road, E2.

Luther was taken by ambulance to an east London hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 11.40pm.

A post-mortem examination on Monday, August 1, gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

Luther had been at a boxing event held at York Hall on Old Ford Road on Friday night, and had become involved in an altercation inside the venue. He was then attacked by numerous people as he left the venue, before being chased across Cambridge Heath Road and into a petrol station where he collapsed.

Detectives are said to be keeping an open mind over motives at this stage and continue to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact them.

Anyone that can assist detectives should call the incident room on 020 8345 3715.

Eight men previously arrested in August on suspicion of murder are currently on bail pending further enquiries.

A 23-year-old man arrested in September has been released, with no further action planned against him; and a 20-year-old man interviewed under caution in October was not arrested.

Enquiries continue.
