Man jailed after attack with three foot metal bar in Swanley

A man suffered a serious cut to his head after he was attacked with a three foot long metal bar, a court heard.

The victim was left with a large wound, between four and five inches long, after the violent struggle.

Alfie Rye, 28, of Hill Rise, Darenth, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after the incident in Northview, Swanley.

The attack occurred at around 2pm on Wednesday, July 19 in 2017.

Rye was a passenger in a Land Rover which had to slow down while the driver of a Toyota estate tried to park his car.

Rye started to argue with the Toyota driver, a man in his 40s.

The Land Rover drove slowly past with both occupants shouting abuse, but then stopped further down the road.

Rye then got out, and headed back to the victim armed with a metal bar.

The man was, by now, out of his Toyota and a violent attack ensued, with the victim trying to take the weapon away from Rye.

Rye ran back to the Land Rover still holding the bar, but dropped a black glove at the scene.

Police later found it to contain his DNA.

After his arrest, Rye was also picked out by a witness in an identification parade.

He was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

At Woolwich Crown Court, Rye denied the offence but was convicted by a jury, and sentenced to seven years in prison.

DC Bill Lait said: "This was a sudden attack on a driver who had been trying to park his car and had briefly inconvenienced another vehicle.

"Rye’s unprovoked assault caused a deep wound and it is fortunate the victim didn’t sustain even more serious injuries.

"While in prison he should consider the implications of his violent actions.

"I would like to thank the victim and the witnesses who assisted us throughout the investigation and trial."
