Police called to Heath Lane, Dartford, after man seen with a knife

An arrest has been made after a man was seen wielding a knife near a school.

Police were called to Heath Lane, Dartford, at 3.04pm and the man is in custody.

The man was seen near Dartford Science and Technology College (DSTC) in the lower part of the road and pupils are only being allowed to leave if they are being picked up by parents.

Headteacher Anne Davis said on the school's website: "As you may all be aware, there was an incident outside of the college today at 3pm.

"The police are dealing with this and have detained someone in connection with this matter.

"I am extremely proud of the staff, parents, and students who worked together during this difficult time. I am also thankful to members of the public who offered their help.

"The college is open as usual tomorrow."

Wilmington Academy in Common Lane also temporarily prevented pupils from leaving, as did Westgate Primary School in Summerhill Road, which is a short walk from DSTC.

An image said to be of the man, pictured wearing a balaclava, is circulating on picture sharing app Snapchat.

It has since been posted on other social media sites.

Officers remain at the scene in Heath Lane.

A police spokesman said inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
