Eynsford wins South East in Bloom gardening competition

The village of Eynsford has been crowned top of the pots in this year’s South East in Bloom gardening competition.

The small parish was awarded gold after a 10-year wait after volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare, plant, and coordinate floral decorations to give the area a makeover.

Gardeners spent 4,000 hours working with a variety of community groups, including Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, Anthony Roper School and local businesses, on floral displays, cultivation, maintenance, composting and water recycling.

Pauline Penney, who coordinates the gardening team, said: “Gold at last – which is a fantastic reward and result for all our volunteers and for the first time we have been given the County Award for Kent for getting the highest number of points of all the Kent entries.”

South East in Bloom is part of the nationwide Britain in Bloom contest, where boroughs, communities, residents, and businesses work together to improve their living environment.

Mrs Penney added: “The judges report is extremely complimentary. The judges noted our use of grey water, recycling and composting. This included egg shells and coffee grounds given by the Riverside Tearoom to deter slugs and snails attacking nearby plants.

“The judges liked the involvement of Anthony Roper Primary School and other community groups, the schedule of work parties and other events showed year-round activity and community involvement.

“The judges also appreciated the initiatives for ongoing fund raising including local business support.”
