A woman who said she was raped more than 50 times at Little Brook Hospital has spoken about her ordeal.

The woman, identified as Catherine, described her time at the psychiatric hospital as a “playing field for predators”.

Having had a nervous breakdown, her abuse at the Dartford hospital began.

The mother-of-two, understood to now be in her 40s, told the BBC: “He came in my room, pulled the covers back, got on top, did what he had to do and left.

“If someone had come into my room with a knife and stabbed it in me, I don’t think I would have flinched. I was in a bad way, and therefore I was hugely open to abuse.”

She said the man would give her gifts such as Valium, cigarettes and chocolate.

Several years later, having left the hospital, Catherine spoke about what had happened and the care worker was arrested.

In 2008 he pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a patient and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Catherine received a letter of apology from Kent and Medway NHS Trust and £100,000 in compensation.

Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust, which runs Little Brook Hospital, said it could not comment on Catherine’s case because it happened before the formation of the trust.

A spokesman said: "We take the safety of our patients and staff very seriously and have in place stringent pre-employment checks and on-going training and supervision of our staff.

"All staff entering employment at KMPT and who are going to be working with patients and young people undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check."
