Bosses at Eagle Heights wildlife park in Eynsford thank supporters and Crystal Palace Football Club fans for donating £8,000 to Save Kayla appeal

Zookeepers have thanked supporters after receiving an £8,000 lifeline to remain open over the Easter holidays.

Bosses at Eagle Heights wildlife park in Eynsford launched an appeal to save the centre from closure last month after maximising their bank overdraft.

The reptile house was closed while talks were held to rehome other animals, leading to fears it could shut down completely.

But the doors are set to remain open after supporters raised £8,000 to help them until the Easter period when staff hope to cash in on increased visitor numbers.

The appeal was focused around Kayla, a bald eagle who is also a mascot at Premier League football club Crystal Palace.

And the south Londoners were not short in coming forward with donations to help Selhurst Park's cult figure.

Kayla has attended home matches since 2010, flying from one end of the pitch to the other before the teams emerge from the tunnel.

An Eagle Heights spokeswoman said: "Eagle Heights wants to say a massive thank you to all the support from the Crystal Palace and Eagle Heights fans for donating to the ‘Save Kayla’ appeal.

"Eagle Heights relies heavily on the support from the public and we would not be here still if it were not for you.

"We are now in a better position to keep the centre open, but still have a long way to go.

"Thank you again to all those that are supporting us, and we hope to see you all soon."

On Saturday, the centre held a volunteer day where visitors had the chance to help with the upkeep of the animals.
