New signing Lewis Smith turned down a move to Dartford last summer, manager Tony Burman has revealed.

The 23-year-old striker impressed Burman while playing in AFC Hornchurch’s promotion-winning side of 2011-12.

Smith spoke to Burman but chose to stay in Essex rather than try his luck with the Conference Premier club.

But when the Urchins were relegated straight back to the Ryman League Premier Division, the conversation resumed.

Burman said: “I tried to sign him last summer. I’ve kept an eye on him and wanted to ask the question again this summer.

“He liked it in Conference South and played near enough all the games last year. He’s looking for that opportunity and I’m hoping we can bring the best out of him.”
