All the latest from Crayford Greyhound Track

We’ve had some eye-catching displays recently, with surprisingly fast times recorded by newcomers.

This can be the case particularly with youngsters, as you never know what sort of times a dog is capable of.

Greyhounds are consistent and while we have around 700 dogs on our racing strength, across eight levels of ability, the difference between best and worst would only be around one second over 380m.

So a certain time range would be expected for a certain grade. When more is found, take note.

At the weekend, Allpip, trained by Patsy Cusack, flew home in an A7 grade race over 380m in 23.50sec which is more in keeping with what you would expect from an A2-level dog.

This was the first time the dog has gone under the 24sec barrier and, to be fair, his first race at this level.

Nonetheless, the winning margin of just over seven lengths cannot be ignored.

The dog should only receive a one-level upgrading to A6 but he may be raised higher.

Droopys Coco was bought in the Irish greyhound auction sales in March and it became apparent 380m was too short as she was unable to get into her races early.

The decision was then taken to give her a run over 540m, which would give her a chance to hit her stride.

As a result of her trial time, she ran her first race in bottom grade S8 and flew around winning by more than 14 lengths in 34.44. In this grade you would expect something like 35.30.

She was upgraded three levels for her next outing to S5 grade and finished fourth after being crowded at the first bend.

Her latest run saw her finish second, however again she did a fast time of 34.43, beaten by just half a length, so these two times are no fluke. She will win in S5 soon. She has recently been tried over 714m, which I think will also suit her.

Top tip last week, Tinas Junior, won at the weekend at 6-4 and I am confident Allpip and Droopys Coco will continue the trend.
