Giving attacking players a free role is the key to success according to Charlton boss Guy Luzon after he saw his side beat Huddersfield 3-0 on Saturday.

Luzon said: “In attack I give them advice and I put them in the position but I always say they have to bring the quality. They don’t need to be like robots. They need to make the right decision in the right moment and play how they want.

“My philosophy in defence is we have rules and each player knows exactly what they have to do. Three in the last four games, we have kept clean sheets.

“The goals were great but we had options to score more, we missed another three or four goals but we are happy with the result and the way we played.

“When I win ugly it’s okay but I like to win beautifully because I believe in the long term playing ugly football will not bring you results.

“When you play like this on the ground with combinations with a lot of players in the box you will lose maybe one or two games but in the long term we will take the points and the fans will enjoy it.”

A brace from Tony Watt and a Johann Gudmundsson goal was enough to see off former Addicks player and manager, and now Huddersfield boss, Chris Powell.

“Tony is a player that in the summer I tried a lot to sign him for Standard Liege and I am happy that me and him are at Charlton now," added Luzon. "Tony is young with a lot of potential. He has a lot to improve but he has the time.

“One of the reasons he played well was because he worked hard in defence. When you work harder in defence you are sharper. All the offensive players did well because we are not a one-man show.”

Saturday’s game also saw a bumper crowd at The Valley that saw the home side sell out their tickets due to their annual Football for a Fiver campaign.

“The atmosphere was great," added the Charlton boss. "I hope they will come on Tuesday because all the people who have been here have enjoyed it.

“Our target, and my target as a coach, is to bring the result and the way we bring that result. It was very important for us with a full stadium that all of the fans go home with a good feeling. And it was also very important for me the way that we play.”
