The England Athletics Junior Championships at Bedford produced a few medals for the top echelon of Kent’s younger athletes, writes Alan Newman.

Britain’s third-best junior decathlete, David Hall (Dartford Harriers), won the under-23 400m in a fast 47.27sec. Joe Fuggle (Tonbridge, 54.10) claimed the under-18 400m hurdles with a new personal best.

Ryan Driscoll (Tonbridge, 8min8.93sec) won the under-23 3,000m steeplechase and former Tonbridge team-mate James Whiteaker (Blackheath, 64.91m) took the under-18 javelin title.

Cameron Corbishley (Medway & Maidstone, 43.30.66) was second in the under-20 10,000m walk and Guy Thomas (Tonbridge, 43.58.41) was third in the under-20 10,000m walk.

Elsewhere, there were near misses for medals from fourth-placed Dominic Brown (Tonbridge) in the under-23 1,500m final (3.59.0) after a 3.50.8 heat and Chris Olley (Tonbridge, 14.25.1) was fourth in the under-20 5,000m final.

Medway and Maidstone’s Michael Watson went out in the under-20 100m heats (11.14) and Harriet Day (68.57) was eliminated in the early rounds of the under-20 women’s 400m hurdles.
