All the latest from Crayford Greyhound Track

Three Choices could make it three wins in a row if she can claim her next race here.

The dog, trained by Jean Liles, has only had three races to date and while she could only make fifth place in her debut event, she has gone on to win the other two races – one over 380m and the other over 540m.

The dog had just eight races in Ireland – winning at both Clonmel and Shelbourne
Park – before joining the Liles kennel earlier this year.

Her latest victory in a time of 23.68sec over 380m is good enough to win in a grade higher next time. Watch out for her on the race cards.

I have often stated the importance of having early pace in a greyhound, especially here at Crayford, because that is what is required to win races.

This seems to apply equally over both the 380 and 540m distances at the track.

My advice is to follow those sectional times, trap-to-line first time round and look out for gradual improvement which is always a good indication that a dog is about to land a win.

In newcomer Spinalong, we had such a case. The dog won at the third time of asking having reduced his sectional times from 3.76sec down to 3.73 and then 3.70 when he won.

I am expecting further improvements and with a win time of 24.10 in his latest race, there is scope enough to land an A6-graded race now.

Racegoers often ask me about greyhounds’ finish times and they naturally tend to go for the fastest finish time dog on the clock but that is not necessarily the way to go.

In order to win, you have to dictate affairs early on in a race and to my mind, the sectional times are a better indication of a dog’s chances.

Unusually, we had three joint-winners in our Bitch-of-the-Month award for March.

The title was shared by Glenside Faith, Lordsbury Dolly and Springwood Erica.

Based on the dogs’ individual race record during the month, the threesome shared identical records of three wins, a second and a third in their five races.

These events and their winners have a habit of producing further victories during the next couple of months, so take a note of the names.
