Dartford accept bid from League 1 AFC Bournemouth for striker Charlie Sheringham

Charlie Sheringham

Dartford have accepted a five-figure bid from AFC Bournemouth for 12-goal striker Charlie Sheringham.

The former Welling and Bishop's Stortford forward, who was at Crystal Palace and Ipswich as a youngster, tops the scoring charts in Blue Square Bet South this season.

Sheringham (pictured) could complete his move to the League 1 outfit by the start of the week after Dartford confirmed they had agreed a fee. He would initially move on loan before making the switch permanent when the transfer window opens at the start of January.

Dartford company chairman Bill Archer said "Charlie Sheringham has been informed of the offer from AFC Bournemouth, and is currently taking advice from his advisors with regards to this.

"Charlie is really happy at Dartford FC; he doesn't need to go away and leave and we will hang on to him if possible, but we will not stand in his way to progression if he chooses to move on."

Sheringham, the son of former Manchester United and England forward Teddy, played 90 minutes in Dartford's FA Cup third qualifying round win over Cray Wanderers on Saturday. Ironically he would be suspended for the next round after collecting his fifth caution of the season during the game.

Is Charlie Sheringham good enough to play League 1 football? Have your say in our comments section below.

Waste of money, seen him play against Gillingham and Millwall and don't get me wrong he was good but he's defiantly not good enough for league 2 let alone 1. Don't know why we need him, he won't be able to make the first team. His name is the trophy here, but he will probably improve so you never now.

I agree with Realist and don't think his/her post was particularly rude or antagonistic. Why should Gillingham have an automatic right to every decent non-league player in Kent!? Even if we did make a move for Sheringham, he'd be daft to choose us over Bournemouth.
Also we have a squad of 32 now. It's not like Champ Manager where you can just keep adding every striker on a good run. Some you just have to trust won't come back to haunt you, but if Sheringham does go on to be a success, so be it. You can't sign everyone.

Having said that (and Grassbank is right to ask what this has to do with GFC since there has been no official approach since Stimson was manager), I think it's ridiculous to say Gillingham have 'thieved' players from other Kent teams. That's how football works - smaller clubs' better players will be snapped up by bigger clubs. It's happened to Gillingham as often as it has to Dover and will continue to do so. Even some of the top English teams can't keep the likes of Fabregas, Ronaldo or Xavi Alonso when their heads have been turned.

The only deal which I think did Gillingham no favours at all was appointing Hendon. At best that was unfortunate, at worst it ethically wrong, but I'd say Dover fans have a right to be angry about that (even though I hardly think they lost out!). As for signing Flitney, Fish and Birchall - it's not thieving, it's just the way the football pyramid and the transfer market works.

"oooh someones tired" - I think realist was having a pop at the two previous posters cos they were just trying to be negative about gills rather than making any decent comment about charlie. And actually, this whole thing has nothing whatsoever to do with the gills.

I think you'll find the first poster(s) normally go under the name ron, dave etc when trying to wind up angst about all things gills.

Good luck to charlie. hope he does well at Bournemouth.

I've seen Charlie play a few times and to be honest to the Gills fans he is not that good. In Birchall when he comes back he is in a completely different league to Charlie so no need to worry. If his last name wasn't Sheringham then he would not have all this attention!

What on earth does this have to do with Gillingham FC? The lad is a Dartford player and has fully earned his move into the football league.

So stop bemoaning that your club hasn't thieved more players from local clubs when in actual fact they have a lot of previous for doing it.

Good luck to Charlie, glad he is moving onto a club us Dartford fans can wish him well at.

And the money for this signing would come from?

Where's the rule that says we have to sign every player that scores a few goals in Kent?

Unless it has escaped your notice, we have Kuffour (highly-experienced league player) on loan until January with a view to a permanent transfer. A far more reliable bet than shelling out money on someone who's only found the net outside the league.

Try living in the real world, a world where you don't throw your toys out of the pram because we haven't signed everyone in Kent.

    NOT AGAIN!!!

After the Gills miss out on Cody Mcdonald when the Darts sold him to Norwich, now yet again it appears that a diamond on our own doorstep is off to another league club!!!

What sort of scouting network has the Gills got now??? Once could be called a mistake - twice is unforgivable!!!

That said all the very best Charlie and good luck to you at AFCB - thanks for the memories that you've given Kent football fans both at Welling and Dartford...
