Charlton Athletic 1 Ipswich Town 2

Emmanuel Frimpong

Charlton suffered their third straight defeat after a 2-1 reverse against fellow Championship strugglers Ipswich at The Valley on Boxing Day.

Town striker DJ Campbell missed the chance to put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after Emmanuel Frimpong, pictured, brought down Lee Martin, firing wide of Ben Hamer's post, while Dale Stephens rattled the woodwork from a long-range free-kick soon after.

However, after a cross from Andy Drury was only half-cleared, Daryl Murphy teed-up Campbell to fire the opener on 34 minutes and, despite Ricardo Fuller seeing a shot saved by Stephen Henderson, Murphy doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time when he tapped in the rebound after Hamer blocked Martin's shot.

Charlton improved after the break and Rob Hulse saw a header saved by Henderson before they got back into the game 18 minutes from time when Martin tripped Chris Solly in the box and Danny Haynes converted.

Hulse was denied by Henderson and Yann Kermorgant sent an acrobatic volley over the bar but the Addicks suffered defeat in boss Chris Powell's 100th game in charge to slip to 18th ahead of the visit of Derby on Saturday.
