Sweet celebrations for port on terminal’s 60th anniversary

Cupcakes have been getting everywhere at the port of Dover as part of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the opening of the car ferry terminal at the Eastern Docks.

The little cakes have been handed out to people associated with the harbour and all its activities and a film has now been put on YouTube showing the cakes’ journeys around the port.

As well as finding their way to ferry crews, contractors at both the Eastern and Western Docks, staff in terminal control and the police launch, the cakes also made their way to the Border Agency, where one was detected as it passed through the security scanners.

One of the cakes was even given its own identity pass and another found itself between the claws of a crab on Sue’s seafood stall on the seafront. Each of the recipients took the opportunity to wish the ferry terminal a happy birthday.

Port chief executive Tim Waggott said the terminal had played an incredibly important role for the nation over the past 60 years, now handling £80 billion of trade every year. He said: “In the first year, it was anticipated that we would handle about 10,000 vehicles per year.

“In fact 10 times that amount materialised. Amazingly, today we welcome around 12 million customers travelling in 4.5 million vehicles each year.”

“We have an exciting future ahead of us. Exploring new opportunities, investing in first-class infrastructure, building stronger relationships than ever before among ourselves, with our customers and with our community, are all positive things to grasp.”

Mr Waggott said the celebratory cakes had been made for every member of staff and he, along with the management team, would be delivering them. He said a short film about the cakes making their way around the port had been produced to mark the anniversary.

“It is a light-hearted, fun and celebratory film, but it really does illustrate the incredible diversity of the people and organisations that make up the port, but also the team spirit that is both essential and self evident in what makes the special place in which we are all fortunate to work such a success story.”
