Dover Operatic and Dramatic Society members are staging their first ever production of the musical West Side Story this week.

Director Michael Anders said: “The society has never performed West Side Story before, with a difficult musical score and dance numbers to really sink your teeth into, it hasn’t been easy.The show, with music by Leonard Bernstein and original choreography from Jerome Robbins, will be performed at the White Cliffs Theatre at Astor College for the Arts, from this evening to Saturday at 7.15pm.

“However, the cast of 31 has risen to the challenge and we have what promises to be a fantastic show.”

Mr Anders, a returning member to the society, has been inspiring the cast with his energy and enthusiasm and his training in stage combat has helped with the rumble between the Jets and the Sharks.

Jenny Cain has worked the members hard with the choreography, while she has kept several numbers close to that of original choreographer Jerome Robbins, she has put her own stamp on things too, particularly with Cool and the Dream sequence.

Scott Cain and Faye Potter take on the lead of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria.

Scott said: “This is the one show I have always wanted to do and never thought I would get the opportunity. It has been amazing!”
