Work is expected to start on vital redecoration of the Timeball Tower exterior, thanks to a welcome pledge of money for repairs.

In December the Mercury’s front page announced the launch of a public appeal to help preserve Deal’s iconic landmark as volunteers and trustees faced a big challenge to pay a £20,000 bill.

Now it is smiles all round, as the owners of the historic landmark, the district council, is organising the redecoration of the exterior of the Timeball.

Treasurer and volunteer Mike Carey said: “This follows representations made by our chairman Dr Stephen Chappell Roger Walton at the council. The excellent publicity in the pages of the EKM has surely helped in this very satisfactory conclusion.

“Hopefully all our contributors will be happy with the redirection of the fund which will result in an improved amenity with arguably more benefit to visitors than work on the exterior.”

Mr Carey gave a thank you to all the Timeball’s contributors and supporters, including the district council.
