St George's Church in Deal hosts ambitious arts and music events

An ambitious music and arts event appealing to all the senses will be performed at St George’s Church from 7.30pm today (Sunday).

The event, which is a Deal Festival first, will see Indonesian pianist Maria Immaculata “Imma” Setiadi collaborate with painter Penny Bearman, sculptor David White and Trinity Laban Conservatoire dancers.

It will showcase the works of French composers Olivier Messiaen and Claude Debussy, who were known for breaking musical boundaries in their day, while the other art forms respond to what they hear.

Artistic director Paul Edlin came across Miss Imma in May and asked her to get involved with the festival. She is working to make music more accessible to a wider audience.

On hearing about the staging, both Mrs Bearman and Mr Potter jumped at the chance to get involved.

They have rehearsed it only once.

Mrs Bearman said: “All of us have the same respect to try to reach out to the public and to work in challenging and unusual situations.

"This is quite different in that we are responding to what we hear."

She added: “I have always liked working with musicians. If I’m working outside and someone starts busking next to me, I love it.”

Mr Potter said: “I’ve never done something like this before. I’ve never worked so freely with clay. It’s stunning.”

The show is for people of all ages. The audience will be seated in the balcony area of the church allowing an aerial view of the show.

The artists have decided they will donate their works to the festival.

The Deal Festival costs about £150,000 to put on. Money is raised through ticket sales, trusts and foundations and public funding. To find out more about the events, pick up a leaflet found in all shops in Deal.
