Bodybuilder Callum Vine shares ambitious plans as new owner of BodyWorks Gym in Deal

The new owner of a Deal gym is looking for aspiring bodybuilders and powerlifters to share his expertise with.

Callum Vine, 22, from Dover, took over BodyWorks Gym in Mill Hill last month, receiving the baton from Roy Fendt who ran the business for 20 years.

Having given the property a lick of paint, a new sign and extended its opening hours, he is now on a mission to recruit new members.

Mr Vine said: “I’ve already had six or seven people say to me they’d like to go in for a body building competition next year which I’ve said I’d be happy to train them for.

“But it doesn’t matter if people want to compete or not, I want to help anyone reach their personal goals, women included.”

Mr Vine, who has worked as a personal trainer in the Dover area for the past two and a half years, is a competitive bodybuilder himself.

Since the age of 15 he has been entering competitions across the country.

In 2011, aged only 16, he was named Under 18s British Champion in Powerlifting, lifting more weight than those in the category above him.

“Following on from that I got invited to the European Championships,” he said.

“But I didn’t attend because I wanted to do bodybuilding instead.”

It proved a smart move for the former Dover Grammar School for Boys pupil, who, then aged 17, was named the Under 20s South Coast UK Champion at a British Natural Bodybuilding Federation (BNBF) contest.

In 2015, he added Under 23s UKBFF South Coast Champion to his string of titles.

When asked why he does it, Mr Vine said: “Whether it’s strength or physically growing, I’ve just become obsessed with it.

“For me, it’s all or nothing. I can’t just go and halfheartedly do something.

“It’s got to be to the best of my ability.”

And he wants to apply the same attitude to his new business.

Having waited nearly a year for the deal to go through – after his girlfriend’s father, David Derrick, pointed out the opportunity to him - he has pledged to reinvest the gym’s profits back into new equipment.

The building is already fully equipped with free weights, resistance machines and cardio equipment.

Gym pug, Honey, could also be considered part of the apparatus.

But Mr Vine is keen to upgrade it in time. His other aspiration is to transform the outdoor area for circuit training, plus add TVs to the two workout spaces.

There is also changing rooms and showers, plus a protein bar and supplement shop, open to non-members too.

A car park at the rear of the building is also available.

Mr Vine said: “I’m trying to specialise in what this gym is about. I don’t think you need to cover everything. I want to focus on one client base and do it well.

“I’ve already started running weekly challenges to motivate members.

“I also want to do power lifting competitions with cash prizes, just to make people more competitive.”
