Garden blaze in Elizabeth Carter Avenue, Deal, prompts warning about cigarettes

Firefighters have warned people to dispose of cigarettes carefully after a garden blaze in Deal last night (Tuesday).

The blaze broke out in Elizabeth Carter Avenue and the alarm was raised at about 6.15pm.

Paul Evans, crew manager of Deal Fire Station, said: "The cause of the fire is undetermined but we suspect it is because of a cigarette. Remember to discard of smoking materials properly."

When they arrived at the scene, a neighbour had already been helping by removing some of the rubbish from the garden. But the flames still spread to a fence and the door frame of the house.

"If it had got any worse it could have been quite dodgy," crew manager Evans added.

One pump attended and it took them a short time to put the flames out.
