Daniel Squire memorial ride with Deal Tri raises cash for Kent Air Ambulance

A keen cyclist who was killed on the A258 road at Ringwould was remembered at a special bike ride organised by his fitness-loving friends at Deal Tri.

Daniel Squire, 18, died after being struck by a van in September 2013.

In his honour, riders from Deal Tri and other clubs in the area took to their bikes, covering distances of 100km, 75km and 50km. And they raised almost £800 for Kent Air Ambulance.

Symon Squire, Daniel’s father, said the event on Sunday was “informal – just as Daniel would have liked it”.

It started at Ripple Village Hall, following marked routes for two of the challenges.

Those with higher ambitions went through Eastry, Barham, Folkestone, Ashford, Canterbury and the smaller villages back to Ripple, where cakes members had baked were served.

Former St Edmund’s Catholic School pupil Daniel worked at London Fancy Box in Dover. He lived in St Margaret’s at Cliffe with mother, Tracy Squire. He was a respected member of Deal Tri.

Before the accident, on Saturday September 7, 2013, he had been given a place competing in the Bolton Iron Man competition, an endurance test that incorporates a 112-mile cycle ride, a marathon run (26.2 miles) and a 2.4-mile swim.

On the day of the crash he was cycling to his father’s house in Ringwould, and was then due to meet friends for a training ride at Marke Wood in Walmer.

After the crash he was airlifted to hospital in London where he died the following day from his injuries.

Since his death, the family has continued to raise cash for Kent Air Ambulance by holding fundraisers, including annual memorial football matches.

Mr Squire said: “I would like to say thank you to the people who took part in Sunday’s ride in Daniel’s memory and for donating to Kent Air Ambulance.”
