Footballers support the Mercury's Why Risk It campaign for Daniel Squire

Footballers in the district have been pledging their support for the Mercury’s Why Risk It? campaign in memory of Daniel Squire.

The dangers of texting and driving – as highlighted in the Daniel Squire court case – prompted the Mercury to launch our own car sticker safety campaign.

On Sunday, July 12, 10 teams of footballers played a six-a-side tournament at Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre in Deal Road.

Organiser Chris Cannon said: “It was a great day, with a really good standard of football being played in the right spirit.

“All those involved were pleased to remember Daniel and support such great causes.

“I would like to thank all the players and referees for making the event so worthwhile, Freedom Leisure for use of their 3G pitch, City Awards for kindly donating today’s trophy and the Co-op in Sandwich for kindly donating water for the players and referees.”

The final saw two Deal and District Sunday League teams renew their rivalry, the Magnet and Keppel Cosmos. Magnet won 2 - 1 and received the trophy donated by City Awards of Chartham.

Daniel’s parents, Symon and Tracy Squire presented them with the trophy.

It raised £514.20 for the Justice for Daniel Squire Campaign and Kent Air Ambulance.
