A restaurant boss and three ambulance crews tried in vain to save a customer, who died last night.

Police spokeswoman Jane Walker said officers were called to Beach Street, Deal, at 6.30pm after a man had been found unwell. They are not investigating the death as suspicious.

The 73-year-old has been named locally as Peter Robson.

Ian Dunkerley, who took it in turns to perform CPR with his son, Ben, said he believes he might have had a seizure.

“He had frequented us for a couple of months, and was never any trouble", he said.

“We were working with the emergency services while we were waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

“When the first responder arrived, she took over and tried her best, and then the ambulance crew took over but he subsequently died.”

Mr Robson was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.30pm.

Mr Dunkerley added: “He wasn’t drunk. He had only had a couple of pints so he was quite all right.

“He was hot because he had a high-vis coat on.

“He was sat on a chair out the front and a member of staff went outside and noticed he had gone to sleep and she couldn’t wake him up.”

When Mr Dunkerley went outside he checked for a pulse but there wasn't one.

They put him on the floor with a pillow under his head and performed first aid.

He added: “When the emergency services arrived they did their best to revive him.

“The only positive was that he was sat looking out to sea with a beer.”

Police spokeswoman Jane Walker added: “With a sudden death like this, officers have to investigate to make sure it is not suspicious and we don’t believe there were any suspicious circumstances”.
