Deal: Reboot cost £300k but Wellingtons' fry-up is still a bargain

A cafe in Deal has reopened its doors after a £300,000 makeover but one thing that remains the same is the price of its traditional breakfast.

Sibel Tatton, who bought Wellingtons in Beach Street in April last year, has pledged to keep the price of the establishment’s popular fry-up – which includes tea, toast and orange juice – at £5.25.

She said: “This place is well known for its breakfast and the price of it will be frozen. That is my gift to the people of Deal.”

Mrs Tatton is the fifth owner of the building which has been an eatery since 1937.

Having worked in catering for 11 years, she took the decision to look at how it was run and get to know its customer base before the refurbishment work started in January.

It has now been transformed into a stylish venue with a breathtaking sea view and bespoke furniture handcrafted by her husband, Attila Basoglu, a businessman and civil engineer.

Customers were given their first taste of what’s on offer on Friday.

Mrs Tatton, who has had links to the area for 28 years, said: “I’m in love with Deal and I always wanted something like this. Since I’ve been here, the overwhelming support and love from the people in Deal has humbled us.”

Among the new features is a roof top garden which will be completed in two week’s time, along with their alcohol licence.

The kitchen has been quadrupled in size and there is now room for 130 guests – 80 more than before.

The cost of the work which has included some structural amendments has amounted to £300,000 – £45,000 of which was spent with wood and timber business Hutchings in Albert Road, Deal.

Mrs Tatton has employed 22 people, including head chef Peter Cullen, who is offering a new menu supporting local producers.

It features some of the old favourites but also salad options, pasta and rice dishes, home cooked fajita, burritos and tachos, as well as a healthy children’s menu.

Mrs Tatton said: “I love people and I love making people happy and food makes people happy.

"We want people to have healthy food in a stylish environment, without having to break the bank.

"That’s our philosophy here.”

The general managers are Ozge Dalkilic and Constance Goodban.

Opening times are 8am until 6pm until June 15. Afterwards Wellingtons will be open from 8am until 11pm. Dogs are welcome.
