A safety review says the speed limit of the A258 at Hacklinge is 'dangerous and excessive'

The speed limit on the A258 Deal to Sandwich road is “dangerous and excessive” according to an independent review carried out by a charity’s health and safety advisers.

Martha Trust’s chief executive, George White, instigated a review of the road following a fatal accident which occurred within metres of its residential home in Homemead Lane two weeks ago.

Investigator Alex Hawk of Safety and Management Solutions (SAMS), found a lack of visibility and street lighting, and had speeding concerns. His report will now be sent to Kent County Council for consideration.

Mr White said: “As we are a home with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities I have long been concerned with the speed of the traffic on this road for both the buses with our staff and residents on and our staff when entering and leaving the premises.

“The brow of the hill makes it difficult particularly for vehicles leaving Martha with the present speed limit.

“I am sure the Highways department at KCC will look at this situation and review it.”

Mr Hawk has suggested that two convex mirrors are placed opposite Homemead Lane junction to provide a visual aid clearly showing traffic approaching from both directions.

His report states the need for additional attached lighting to the existing road signs and street lighting at the junction to highlight it to other drivers.

He’s also calling for a review of the 50mph speed limit, reducing traffic to 30mph on the bend of the road, accounting for stopping distances.

He said: “The 50mph speed limit covering the Sandwich Road bend and road section passing the entrance to Martha Trust is dangerous and excessive and as such should by reviewed by the local council to reduce it to a safer speed.”

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses following the death of a woman after a crash on the road on Tuesday, September 20.

The 53-year-old, who has been named as Pauline Delacour, of Wilson Avenue, Deal, died from her injuries three days later.

Mr White added: “We at Martha were terribly sad about the fatal accident outside our premises on the A258. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with the family.”
